I thought this was a weed

When you move to a new home, you are unfamiliar with the landscape...we had 2 plants growing near the house that I thought may be weeds, they were quite big and very thick stems...they hadn't flowered all summer and I was just giving them a bit more time before I hacked them down...low and behold we came back from California and they had these HUGE flowers on them, one bright red, the other pink.  Some of the flowers are a good 6-8 in diameter, they are just huge and so pretty!  So glad I waited it out!!
